Doomhammr

Ideal Soldier/Uniwar Novel First Draft Completed

Posted by Doomhammr Jul. 24, 2009 @ 7:04 AM EDT

It's been a month since I've finished it, but I've forgotten to share my information on my first draft of my novel (I number my drafts starting at zero so there's a rough before this). It came out to 105,225 words, (right in the ballpark I was aiming for) a 37% increase in word count over rough draft. Page count is now 534, also a 37% increase over the rough draft's 390 pages. My only disappointment was that it took a year to finish editing the first go-around. I'll be on vacation in the coming week, so even though it's called a vacation, I'm REALLY going to buckle down and this book will be my 9-5 job during it. Here's to hoping I won't go nuts. The stack is much beefier than it looked a year ago. Check back in my previous posts to see the slimmer rough draft.

If it fails, don't commit suicide lolol jk. I think this is gonna be great.

Jul. 24, 2009 | 7:11 PM Doomhammr responds:

So you write the first book and send it out to 300 publishers/agents and it's not picked up. Write the next one and sent it out again. If the second or third book is picked up, you can fix up the first ones and eventually get them sold once you've made a name for yourself. Author Mike Stakepole compares that to a roulette game where if you lose, you just keep your bet.

What are you working on? I say keep at it.

That's a bit of progress, Doomhammr. I bet that you have had times where you were trying to figure out what to write.

Jul. 24, 2009 | 7:14 PM Doomhammr responds:

I can't remember the author's name, but there's this author who has a hilarious way of describing what I call the "middle of the book blues". EVERY author encounters a streak of depression when they hit about the 50% mark in writing a novel when they keep telling themselves things like, "I'm never going to publish this," or, "I'm going to die a homeless man on the streets of some third world country." It's nothing out of the ordinary and you've gotta just fight your way through it.
